 ARTIST PROFILE

From Glendevon, Montego Bay to stages all over the world, Teejay’s fresh, melodic-driven edge is defining a new chapter in his career. Born into a family with three other brothers, the artist was constantly surrounded by music. By nine years old, he released his first song “I Know” on Don Corleone’s 2005 Seasons Riddim. Written by his siblings Tippa and Ice, the song received heavy rotation on Jamaica’s IRIE FM radio station. Though the artist’s career was in its infancy, this was just the beginning of his drift to success.

In 2010, Teejay decided to depart from his studies to pursue music full time and began building a cult following in Montego Bay with records like “World Come Down” and “9X Knowledge.” As he continued to record on riddims, he began to collect some major accolades: in 2015 the artist was invited to perform on the Reggae Sumfest stage for the first time catapulting his name from his hometown to the entire nation. With bookings and dub requests racking up, he continued to vye towards his goal of commercial success. Three years later, “UPTOP BOSS” propelled his name from the island to the Caribbean region and select cities in North America as the track

received heavy rotation in parties, fetes and DJ sets alike.

In 2020 the world shifted. On one hand, the world collectively navigated a unprecedented global pandemic that ceased our sense of normalcy, but on the other, Teejay was trying to work through the grief of a double murder which took the lives of his friends Romario “Grimmy Boss” Wallen and Phillip “Afro Man” Lewis. From this traumatic experience emerged “Good-Bye” featuring UpTop Lee, an emotionally-charged single grieving his losses. He also took some time for introspection to reflect on his own journey, Working hard on improving his health, he refined his image coming back a stronger performer and artist overall. By this time, singles like “Gangster Prayer”, “Day One”, “Owna Lane”, “Trust”, “Internet Badness”, the hit single “Pressure” featuring dancehall behemoth Vybz Kartel, “Henne & Weed”, “Unfaithful Games”, “Grimy”, “Shub Out”, “That’s Not True”, “My Type”, “Zaddy” and “Clean Like Jesus” began to further solidify his presence as lyrical master in the dancehall arena.

In 2022, the artist began touring, rocking the stage in the Caribbean: St. Lucia, Trinidad, Sint Maarten, Grenada, Antigua, St. Vincent, Belize, Costa Rica, Barbados and the Bahamas had fans in drove ready to see the Uptop Boss in all his glory. He also began to touch the road in the U.S. and Canada performing in Florida, New York Boston, Alabama, California, Atlanta, Tampa,Maryland, Toronto and Edmonton, where singles like “Forgive Me” featuring Govana and his hit single “Bitcoin” became popular tracks for audiences.

2023 became the year Teejay would finally hit his much anticipated milestone: linking up with GRAMMY-award winning and diamond-selling artist Shaggy, the two released “De Gyal Dem Time” which became an instant hit. Additionally, the artist became the most recent dancehall artist to sign to a major label where he found a home at Warner Records. He was also able to hit the Sumfest stage again where people commented on his dexterity and aptitude for his onstage performance.

A few months later “Drift” took the world by storm. A departure from his lyrically-laden singles, the infectious record accompanied by a dance created by Gabi Don, dominated TikTok with 129 million views, 103K creation and became a vehicle for the artist to start charting. Amassing over 25 million global streams, the song was also featured on Nicki Minaj’s Queen Radio, piqued as a #1 top SHAZAM track in NYC and entered the Apple Music Reggae track, iTunes Reggae chart, Audiomack Caribbean charts and has finally debuted on Billboard’s R&B and Hip Hop chart for the first week of October 2023.

For Teejay fans, this may have been the product of nearly 13 years of hard work, but for Teejay, this was his destiny. Solidifying himself as one of dancehall’s most versatile entertainers with riveting live stage performance capabilities and truly a student of his craft, Teejay is preparing to release his newest project I Am Chippy. With Shaggy coming on as a mentor and the project’s directing producer, the artist is looking to redefine what dancehall music looks like in mainstream spaces. Titled after a name he was given as a child, ‘Chippy,’ the EP invites listeners to a more personal understanding of the artist and one where he experiments musically, while also giving fans his signature Teejay style. Among the project’s lead single is “Dip,” another dance-focused single created by Pata Skeng. With I Am Chippy, Teejay displays his true multifaceted qualities, his commitment to his talents and a desire to raise dancehall’s bar.

On his legacy and how he wants to be remembered, Teejay says, “That Teejay is a multifaceted artist. He's a young legend, a multifaceted artist who [is] lyrically inclined, everything amazing.”
